Amber

The term used to describe brown tinted glass.

 

Bakelite

A trade name applied to a synthetic resin. It is a hard, black thermo set resin used in making closures. Also called Phenolic.

 

Capacity

The amount of space inside a container provided for a given amount of product.

 

Closure

Any structure or device which is designed to close off the opening of a container and prevent loss of its contents.

 

Continuous Thread

An uninterrupted spiral protruding on the neck of a container intended to mesh with a screw type closure.

 

Cork

The light, tough bark of the cork oak tree used as a plug in containers.

 

Finish

The term used for the opening and surrounding thread area of a container. It is usually designed to accommodate a specific closure.

 

Flame Treating

The process of passing a plastic container through a flame bath to promote oxidation of the surface, therefore making them receptive to inks, lacquers and adhesives.

 

Flash

Extra plastic attached to a container or cap along the parting line or injection point from the mold.

 

Flint

The term used to describe clear or transparent glass.

 

Gross

A value equal to 144 pieces.

 

Liner

A disk of material inserted inside a closure to insure the seal and prevent evaporation or leaking.
