Offset
A printing technique in which ink is transferred from a reservoir to
a printing plate; from the inked printing plate the image is printed on
a cylindrical rubber oil (blanket) and then transferred to the object
to be printed.
Opaque
Descriptive of a material which will not transmit light. Opposite of
transparent.
Overflow Capacity
The capacity of a container to the top of the finish or to the point
of overflow from the container.
Paneling
Side wall collapse of a container occurring during aging or storage,
caused by the development of a reduced pressure inside the container.
Phenolic
Generic name for Phenol-formaldehyde thermosetting plastic. Also see
Bakelite.
Plastic
One of many high-polymeric substances, including natural and synthetic
products, but excluding the rubbers. Plastic is capable of flowing, under
heat and pressure, and can be formed into many different shapes and forms.
In packaging, can be used to make containers, films, foam, closures, etc.
Plastisol
A mixture of resins and plasticizers which are solidified and used in
different packaging applications such as a vacuum seal liner in metal
closures.
Push-up
The recessed area on the bottom of a bottle designed to allow an even
bearing surface on the outside edge and prevent the bottle from rocking.
Recessed Panel
A container design in which the flat area for labeling is indented or
recessed.
Resin
The original solid state, pellet form, of plastic before melting and
forming into the final product. They are typically known as polymers.
Shoulder
The part of a bottle between the main body and neck (finish).
Silk Screen Printing
(Screen Process Decorating) - This printing method, in it's basic form,
involves laying a pattern or outline on a screen made of silk, so that
when ink is drawn across the screen, it is able to pass through the screen
in the desired areas only.
Storage Life
The period of time during which an item can be stored under specific
temperature conditions and remain suitable for use. Storage life is sometimes
called "Shelf Life".
Tamper Resistant Seal
A seal that cannot be opened without partially destroying the cap or
otherwise showing evidence of tampering.
Thermoset
A resin that, once properly cured, will not re-soften when reheated.
Thread
The indented, curved formed section on the inside of the closure that
engages and matches the thread of the container for screw fit purposes.
Torque
The amount of circular force applied to a container to seal or open it.
Translucent
A descriptive of a material capable of transmitting some light, but not
clear enough to be seen through.
Transparent
Descriptive of a material capable of a high degree of light transmission.
(Clear as in glass)
Volume
The amount of product a container is designed to hold, up to the fill
point of the container.
